There are times where a file is accidentally deleted or needs to be restored to a prior state. There are several methods of restoring files, the one you use will depend on the circumstances.

Common Issues

Many times when a file is missing, the user may have just moved the file accidentally. Before restoring anything, work with the user to identify the file name etc. and see if it was saved in an alternate location.

Recovery methods include:

Shadow Copies, Daily Replications, Daily Backups and Offsite Backups.

Shadow Copies:

Shadow copies are used on DJI-DC1's file shares and are the easiest way to restore files. Shadow Copies are taken at 7:00 AM and 12:00 PM and are maintained for 30 days.

Limitations of this solution are:

  • User created a file after 7:00 and deleted it before noon - no shadow copy available
  • User did a bunch of work on a existing file between shadow copies and deleted it or didn't save the changes. The only option then is to restore it to the last shadow copy.

Shadow Copy How To - Please contact Brian or Ryan if you are doing this for the first time!

Restoring from a shadow copy is easy, however you'll need to be careful to not overwrite an entire directory when you only need a single file.

Once you have identified the file name and location, log into DJI-DC1 and browse to that location (in this example the file is called Test Document.txt and is located in the IT Share in the Test Folder).

Access Previous Versions by right clicking on the directory and choose Restore Previous Versions (or right click, go to Properties and select the Previous Versions Tab):

Caution - Do not Choose Restore from here, it will overwrite the full contents of the directory!

The best course of action is to select the time closest to when the file was in a good state or existed, then click Open.

Locate the file, right click and copy it to the desktop:

Then, rename it _RestoredDate_OriginalFileName and copy it to the original location:

Have the user review the file to verify it's what they needed restored. If it is, they can rename accordingly.

If you are unable to locate the file via Shadow Copy, you may need to restore from Veeam.
